Megalithic giants are hovering between ancient pasts and imagined futures. I am recalling the resonance of stalacites in the caves and the shape of megafauna…On a exploration of Jonkershoek, I came across an old sofa and I was thinking about Jane Bennet’s ethos of seeing everything as kin, exploring the concept of comfort as a barrier to the natural world, and contemplating whether I can care for synthetic old foam. The couch and an old mattress reformed, with cutting and stretching, rose up.

This is a 3D render of the Wandering Megalith. There are stones and bricks I collected at its feet and a stone in its heart. Its head stretched out to the stars.

I came across an abandoned couch in the forest. It is a beautiful forest under the fynbos mountains outside Stellenbosch. Who left this couch here? I began to imagine this couch as alive and fill of history. Some of the foam from the sculpture comes from this couch.

I began experimenting with an old mattress that I found from a sofa in the forest. The foam felt like flesh. The first thing I carved out of it was a hand.
